Why A Supernatural Genre TV Show for E4 ?
E4's original TV shows are primarily of the comedy genre, for example Misfits and Inbetweeners. However, they are gaining a lot of attention for their more drama based shows, such as Supernatural and The 100, acquired from different networks. E4 decided to take the risk in creating Clairvoyance, hoping it will reach the success that these similar shows have and with the amazing positive responses from the public, pre-release, it is almost certain to say that Clairvoyance will most likely receive a second season.

Top Notch Cast
Rising British actor, Rahul Malik's most recent project ,Clairvoyance, shows a shocking growth of popularity, weeks before the first episode airs. Co-directors, Shanara Atukorala and Daine Baker-Dee exclusively reveal the casting process. "When we heard from Rahul's manager that he was planning on auditioning for the show, we were quite worried about how he will perform. His participation in the show will be great publicity for us, knowing that Rahul's popularity is constantly rising, but all his works were purely of the comedy genre. We just couldn't imagine what his acting would be like with a more serious atmosphere. He definitely gave us a surprise; a good surprise, when he showed us how diverse of an actor he really is". Along with Malik, Ruth Ladhani, a new actress in the industry, bags the second lead role as Malik's on-screen sister. "This is Ruth's first TV role. She was very nervous at first but it took no time at all for her to get used to the environment and everyone on set. She's made death, very much alive and we assure you that she will soon be one of the most demanded actresses in the UK". Ifeel as though the majority of the public will belive in the potential actors in the making. The cast and c

Why do the Characters Have Strange Eyes?
Clairvoyance,a French word meaning clear (Clair) vision (Voyance) , is the ability to gain information about a person, place or thing without the use of already known senses. For those of you who haven't seen the first episode, this might give you a sense of what the programme will be about (hate to burst your bubble, but red isn't Ruth's real eye colour, its brown). The cast were given contact lenses to make them seem like their eyes different colours. This was Ruth's first time having to wear contact lenses, " Being someone who has really sensitive eyes, I thought putting contact lenses in my eyes would be really painful but it wasn't that bad. Actually, it didn't feel like I had anything in my eyes at all". A tip for those who want to try contact lenses; if you want clear vision, pun intended, make sure you are buying from a licensed contact lens seller.

What to Look Forward to?

The directors of Clairvoyance disclose the details of what's coming up and what to expect "What you saw in the short preview that was aired last week was nothing. There is going to be a lot more action, drama and you will get to meet a lot more interesting characters. I'm sure everyone is curious as to how Ruth's character has returned and what is the real meaning of the strange eyes but you will just have to tune in to find out" .

Ill Manors Broadcast Platform

DVD Extras:

1) What does this tell us about Plan B's intentions in making the film?

Plan B's intentions was to make a film that would not only allow youth who come from council estate backgrounds to feel represented but it also allow people from an ABC1 demographic to understand another reality of life which may hopefully make them be more likely to invest time and money to help these less fortunate young people.

2) What do we learn about the production process for Ill Manors?

We learn that Plan B wanted to produce Ill manors for a very long time. In 2008, a pilot for Ill Manors was shot and there were many institutions who wanted to make this film however, in 2009 during the credit crunch, no one wanted to invest in the project any more. Plan B wanted to continue directing and was asked to make a short film for the Sundance film festival but he was told his 20 page draft was too long and needed to be condensed to 5 pages. He turned it into a rap song instead of a film. He shot a short film named 'Michelle', with his raps used as narration. He wanted to tell the stories of other characters such as Ed from 'Michelle' and decided to try again to produce ill manors.

3) What can you tell about the possible target audience from this short documentary?

This short documentary showed interviews from the cast and crew who pointed out that the possible target audience is the people who have the ability to make a difference in the young people's lives and give them opportunities that they would not usually have. Ed stated that the aimed audience were those who would not normally allow their children to be around chavs (council housed and violent). This is because the film might be able to make them understand more about the youth's reality and that they can be the something remarkable that can help these young people out of hopeful situations.

4) Does the film successfully do what director Ben Drew (Plan B) set out to achieve? Explain your answer with reference to both the film and the making of documentary.

The film successfully does what Plan B set out to achieve as Plan B wanted to create the film as both a warning to the current youth who come from similar backgrounds as the characters and also raises awareness of the kinds of situations that young people in today's society are in. It shows people in a much higher social class who may also be wealthy, that these young people need to be understood and helped.

Broadcast/Online:

1) What is SBTV? Research the channel and explain how it became successful.
Identify the target audience for this interview (demographics/psychographics) and say why.

The target audience

SBTV is a company run by a group of young people, primarily, Jamal Edwards, who began filming freestyle raps and would upload them on his youtube channel SBTV. SBTV was founded in 2006 but was active from 2010 onwards. The channel's aim is to become a more "diverse youth lifestyle broadcaster" and trys in include all genres of music ranging from rap to acoustic songs. with the appearance of many british grime artists, SBTV began to rise in popularity and the number of views and subscribers also rose. In 2011, Jamal was featured in a google chrome advert, which was good publicity for SBTV and released a cypher with Boy Better Know in 2012.  Th target audience for the interview may be succeeders and reformers as they will understand the hard work that goes into the production of films and music which may inspire them to work harder towards they're long term goals. Also the demographics are probably in group D and E as there isnt many though provoking questions asked by the interviewer and the swearing constantly used, shows that the audience for this video are probably young people who are curious about what Plan B is producing.

2) What is the audi
ence appeal for an interview like this? How does the opening of the clip emphasise this appeal?

The clip begins quite informally and allows the supposed target audience of young people, to identify and form personal relationships with both Plan B and the interviewer. The informal beginning creates a casual atmosphere and allows the audience to feel like Plan B is not an unreachable celebrity, but a normal person like everyone else, who is passionate about music.

3) How is Plan B (the brand) represented in this text?

Plan B is not represented as a top class celebrity, but more like someone who is determined and  hard-working.

Television:

1) What is the history of the Jonathan Ross show? What channels has it appeared on? Why has Jonathan Ross been a controversial media figure in the past?

The Jonathan Ross Show is a British talk show presented by English television and radio presenter, Jonathan Ross. Its first broadcast was 3rd September 2011 on ITV and it airs on Saturday evenings. Jonathan Ross has been accused of homophobia as he hinted that if a boy wants a Hannah Montana toy home, he is likely to be gay. He was also criticized as he complimented Gwyneth Paltrow, during an interview on the show, in a very over sexualized manner

2) Identify the target audience for this interview (demographics/psychographics) and say why.

The target audience for the interview are probably 18-40 as it lets the younger generation who have an interest in both rap and Plan B, get an insight into Plan B's productions and opinions on hip hop. The target audience also reaches ages of around 40 as it gives a different perspective to hip hop and may alter people's strong negative opinions on the particular genre of music. It may be aimed mainly at mainstreamers from the younger generation as hip hop seems to be one of the more listened-to genre, but it may be also aimed at explorers from the older generation, who value individualism that rapping gives people and value the different perspective of rap being very similar to poetry.

3) What is the audience appeal for a programme like the Jonathan Ross show?

The primary audience appeal are the various different celebrities who appear on the shows ranging from artists to actors to presenters. This is because the audience will feel that they have an insight to celebrity lives and feel more personal to these celebrities. Another audience appeal is the comedy that is created during the show and the audience may be able to see a humorous side to their favourite celebrities.

4) How is Plan B (the brand) represented in this text?

Plan B is represented as a successful and knowledgable artist, despite his lack of in depth education. He is portrayed to be very driven by his passion for music and generous due to him wanting to represent the misunderstood youth.

Radio:

1) How popular is BBC Radio 1? Find average listening figures for the station. How has the BBC Radio 1 audience declined over recent years? Why might this have happened?

BBC Radio 1 was at first not very popular as they were losing some of their younger audience members due to the older DJs. Although the audience continued to decrease, BBC Radio 1 succeeded in targeting a younger age group. The audience probably has decreased due to people preferring to listen to their ipods or mp3 players as they can listen to whatever song they want to. Also people tend to dislike the adverts that appear on radios, with many listeners finding these adverts annoying.

2) Who is the target audience for BBC Radio 1?

The target audience for BBC Radio 1 may have been 18-30 due to these people driving cars and listening to the radio, but the celebrity guests invited on the show may appeal to a slightly younger audience, who will either be able to access this while they are also in the car or by using an electronic device such as their computer or mobile phone.

3) How does Plan B promote Ill Manors in this interview?

Plan B heavily promotes Ill Manors as he relates questions that have no relation to Ill Manors, back to the film. For example, when the interviewer asks him "Just got out of bed?", Plan B begins explaining his hectic schedule, shooting the film.Plan B promotes Ill Manors by introducing a few things that the audience can look forward to such as a few clips that needed to be shot and the production process of the film. The constant mention of the hardships of the production process allows the audience to appreciate the effort that is put in to make the film a great production.

4) What representation of Plan B can we find in this interview?

Plan B is represented more as a director than an artist. Although he mentions that he needs to finish producing some songs that are gonna be included in the film, Plan B talks a lot about all the different parts of production he is involved with, presenting him as a devoted director.

I'll Manors Music Video

  • Forms
How is it typical of a music video?
It is a typical music video due to the video being around 4 mins long to promote Plan B as an artist and as a film director. This is due to this song being the main theme music used in his film given the same name, Ill Manors. The music video contains performances from Plan B himself. as he lip syncs to the song while showing emotions as to how he feels about the situation he is in. He is shown to lip sync in various settings but mostly in an empty car park, a roof top and outside, accompanied with other young people who seem to be quite destructive. This is a spectacle as he directly addresses the audience which makes it seem as if he is rapping to the viewers which could send different messages such as insults if the audience is well off or unity if the audience is less fortunate like the kids in his music video. The video does not have an obvious narrative but many people may interpret that the music video aims to show a narrative of chavs (believed to stand for council housed and violent by Plan B) will continue to be uncontrollable and cause havoc in society when they are disregarded and belittled by those who have a higher status and financial situation. The iconic themes of the genre of the music, rap, are clearly shown in the constant images of gangs on the street. This allows the audience to understand the message the artist is trying to convey through these images. The music video includes many montages of the chaos that young people create which emphasizes the role the youth have in today's society and how it is conveyed by the media.
  • Representation
How does it represent the London riots/rioters?
The London riots are represented to be a moral panic for society as it portrays the youth going out of control. This is a dominant representation of young people from a less fortunate background as it reinforces the stereotype they don't have much of a future and will always be a threat to society. These stereotypes are mostly created by those who are wealthier and of a better background than the youth portrayed in this video as those of a better background are considered to be more powerful (Richard Dyer). However, Plan B challenges the theory that those who stereotype are more powerful as he directly addresses them in his music video by labelling them 'little rich boy' and threatening them to go home or they 'could get robbed for real'. This shows that Plan B wants to put young people in power. As the stereotype of young people being threats to society, Plan B understands this shorthand stereotype (Medhurst) and presents it in a different way to show the youth as powerful.
  • Audience
What audience pleasures does it offer?
As this is a music video, it offers pleasure to those who enjoy  this particular style of music. It may also offer pleasure to those who are similar situations as the youth who Plan B describes in his rap lyrics due to personal identity (Blumler & Katz). Plan B also insults politics and the dominant ideology that the youth is useless which may also cause some people who share similar opinions to Plan B, to receive personal identity and pleasure from the music video. Also some of the audience in similar situations as the youth in the music video may get pleasure as they will feel that Plan B exposes the real reasons why they do what they do and that they have a strong figure (Plan B) to look up to. The youth will feel that they are being represented well and will be able to have a voice in society through Plan B's music. The psychographic group that the music video is aimed at is probably the young strugglers who are constantly judged by the rest of the society but this music video helps these strugglers believe that they are not alone.

  • Institutions
How does the music video help to promote the film?
The music video helps promote the film as the content of the music video is very similar to the film; the youth create problems in society whether it is due to selling drugs and being violent or rioting in London. Both the film and the music video portray young people as not having much money and shows them willing to go to any extent to make that money. The music video also contains some of the actors from the film, some which are very obvious where as others are not. As the music video has the same title as the film, viewers who watch the music video will have a high chance of discovering the film along with it. The music video acts as a short hand (medhurst) summary of the film with many stereotypes to help express the genre of music it is, which allows the audience to think about whether this particular genre is something they would like to watch.
